XR Berlin: Finding meaning on the other side of climate collapse

26/04/2019
This is the first Emerge Discussion Group, where each month we’ll be discussing one of the topics explored in the Emerge: Making Sense of What’s Next podcast by Daniel Thorson.

Our theme for April is Deep Adaptation and climate collapse.

Deep Adaptation is a theory outlined by Dr. Jem Bendell in his paper ‚Deep Adaptation: A Map for Navigating Climate Change‘. It refers to the personal and collective changes that might help us to prepare for – and live with – the very real possibility of a climate-induced collapse of our societies. In the face of an overwhelm of information about climate collapse it’s natural to feel scared, anxious or even apathetic. Deep Adaptation suggests we use this opportunity to reassess what really matters to us in our work and lives, with an increased focus on love, community and collaboration.

In the Emerge podcast interview, Dr. Jem Bendell and Daniel Thorson discuss Extinction Rebellion as an expression of fierce love, the meaningfulness and joy on the other side of collapse acceptance, collapse as an invitation to face the reality of our own inevitable death and how to approach the idea of collapse in a helpful way.

This discussion, a collaboration with Extinction Rebellion Berlin, will give a beginners introduction to the theory of Deep Adaptation and then go on to discuss:

– Staying joyful in the face of climate collapse. How do we accept the realities of climate collapse without looking at the world in an overly pessimistic or defeatist way?

– How does the possibility (or inevitability) of near-term social collapse due to climate change make us feel? How do we engage with these emotions in a way that is healthy and constructive?

– What is our role to play in this story? What do we most value, what must we let go of and what must we restore that has been lost?

– How to get involved in the Extinction Rebellion movement in Berlin

This event is open to everyone no matter where you are on your journey of engaging with or discovering this topic.

Spaces are limited. If you’d like to attend please email hello@whatisemerging.com. We will then add you to our private Facebook group. If you are no longer able to attend please let us know so that we can make the place available to someone else!

This event is donation based on a scale of €1-10. This will go to cover costs.
